About Us

The ‘New Zealand Finch Breeders Association’ was founded in 1984 as an Incorporated Society when a group of keen finch breeders joined together to share information and support each other. The main focus of the club is conservation of finches in New Zealand. The club’s constitution was updated in March 2005.

The club’s objectives are to:

• Ensure foreign finch species and populations are self sustaining

• Promote collaborative breeding programmes which include record keeping, the management of genetics and to reduce in-breeding

• Support high standards of husbandry including hygiene, diets and breeding by promoting successful methods

• Promote the sharing of knowledge and experiences of members and aviculturists overseas

• Promote the hobby to new members, particularly youth

We are a friendly, supportive club, promoting the sharing of knowledge and experience of our approximately 200 members and encouraging good finch breeding practices. Most members are based in the North Island, and there are a few overseas members as well. We encourage membership from all over New Zealand.

We offer members:

• ‘Finches’ – the club’s magazine

• Website resources

• Club meetings

• Expertise through our network of members and associated groups

• Library resources

• Sales Table – bird supplies

• Bird sales – 2 or 3 times a year

• Aviary visits

The running of the club is maintained by a Management Committee who meet at least four times a year. Members are elected to serve on the Management Committee at the Annual General Meeting held in March.
